Riverfield Student Places First in Young Writer Context
Emily LeViness Takes First in Poetry, Tulsa City - County Library Award
Sept. 8, 2009. Tulsa City - County Library announced the winners of its annual Young People's Creative Writing Contest and Riverfield's own Emily LeViness took first place in Poetry in the 14 - 15 age group. Her poem, "Away" follows.
Away
By Emily LeViness
Rough bark scraping my feet
Arms out at my sides to keep from
Falling
Falling, falling
Down to where the iridescent dragons- the true
Rulers of this place- fly over
The water, streaming over the rocks
Burbling over the rocks
Burbling and singing a song
Singing a song of seasons
Of ice
Of leaves
Of berries that once grew in bunches
On bushes on the banks
And the seasons changed
And the wind shivered the bushes
Berries dropped like lemmings
Into the current, its quiet burble
A roar to them
And soon they were swept away
And soon it was as if
They were never there at all
And I can almost taste their sweet, tangy flavor
And maybe there were fish in the creek
Maybe the fish ate the berries
And swam in between the rocks
And maybe there were not
It matters not to the dragonflies
The wriggling fish have never been a part of their domain
And the kingdom below the surface
Which tastes of diamonds
And smells of the sky
Belongs to a different kind of domain
The sea
So they flutter on
And maybe they stop to look curiously
At their strange intruder
Who stands on two legs
Teetering on the edge of chaos
And no wings to carry it
To carry me
Away
Maybe they stop for awhile
And then fly on
And maybe they don’t
Maybe they keep going, following
The sorrowful stream until arrival
At a different kind of domain
At the great, vast ending
Of stories
Of songs
Of silence and sighs
The kingdom of fish
The sea, the sea
